A UPC (Universal Product Code) is a unique 12–14 digit code used to identify a product. Similar to an ISRC, it’s a universally standardized identifier.

In music ISRC applies to individual tracks, a UPC can apply to an individual song, album, or product. IE. the same album on vinyl, CD, and cassette will each have a different UPC, and the digital version will also have a different UPC.

If releasing music through a label or distributor, they’ll generate and handle UPCs for you. If you need to obtain your own, you can register through the appropriate issuing agency in your country (IE. GS1 in the U.S. or Canada).

Example sentence: “I registered the UPC for the album.”
