The Transpos-O-Matic is a musical slide rule, a simple and fast tool for the practicing musician, for music teachers, instructors, students, professionals, and hobbyists. With this simple device you can transpose between keys and see at a glance to change chords and progressions. In addition to the functions of the slide rule, the reverse side of the Transpos-O-Matic includes some of the basics of music theory, chord spelling, key signatures, and key spelling.
Let’s say you’ve got the chords for a song in G, but it’s a little too low for your voice. It would be easier to sing in B, for example. But what’s that C sharp minor become in the key of B? Slide the center of the rule to line up the original key, G, with the new key, B, on the sliding scale. Now look at the C sharp in the original key. We see that the C sharp aligns with F, and voila. There are other uses, of course. Say you have music in C, but you want to accompany a B flat clarinet. Or maybe you have music written for E flat sax that you want to play on a G harmonica. You can see that there are plenty of applications. And you can also see, on the top of the rule, the chord aid.
The numbered intervals help you find the notes for ninths and augmented chords, and so on.In addition, the simple 1-4-5 chord progression, or the classic 1-6-minor-4-5, can be easily transposed to any odd key with a quick slide of the center scale. Many a folk song can be played in C, F, and G, but there may come a time when you need to play that in E flat. Just move the center to align the E flat with the 1, and there you have the related chords. For a few bucks, you save memorization, trial and error, and especially, time. It fits easily into an instrument case or notebook. Its thin, laminated construction even lends itself to use as a bookmark.
